Kye Turnbull

Birder and Guide
Kye Turnbull - Birder and Guide

Kye is an experienced birder from South-East Queensland on Australia’s East coast. Birding since seven years-of-age, he has accumulated a broad and deep knowledge of Australia’s land and sea birds that he is always more than happy to share with others.

Kye is passionate about the role local and global citizen science records can play in understanding the habits and movements of bird species, and, in turn, how these records can contribute to conservation science. Demonstrating this, Kye volunteers as an Ebird reviewer, leads local bird walks that aim to educate the general public, and has contributed to extensive area surveys.

Kye’s favourite birds are seabirds. He has been on over 50 pelagic birding trips in Australia, even organising and leading his own boat trips. A highlight experience was going on a seamounts trip off the East Coast of Australia aiming to catch and band the elusive New-Caledonian Storm-petrel. Exemplifying his ability to bird a diverse range of habitats, however, Kye recently set the all-time big year record for his local government area, which is a diverse region inclusive of montane heathlands, rainforests, sandy beach roosts, mudflats, and dry sclerophyll forests.
