Rafael Chaparro

Bird Guide and Field Ecologist
Rafael Chaparro - Bird Guide and Field Ecologist

Rafael is a Puerto Rico-based birding guide and field ecologist with a practical background in tropical ecology, natural history and land-based conservation. He has spent years working across the island's forest, wetlands and agricultural landscapes, giving him a solid familiarity with the habitat and species that define Puerto Rico's birdlife.

Rafael's field experiences includes work in ecological monitoring, habitat assessments and international scientific collaboration with museums and multiple universities. His background also includes ecophysiology work examining how tropical species respond to temperature, humidity and environmental change as well as applied agroforestry work focused on cacao systems, habitat restoration and integrating bird-friends practices into productive landscapes. This hands-on background shapes the way he guides: clear explanations, practical insights and an emphasis on observing birds in a respectful low-impact way and keeping the experience accessible for all skill levels.
