Ornithologist & Bird Bander
Samuel Perfect - Ornithologist & Bird Bander

An avid birder and bird bander, Samuel has spent his formative years growing up in the green hills and woods of central England. Pursuing his passion of birds is a dream come true and having graduated with an Environmental Science degree from the University of Exeter he has gone on to work at bird observatories in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, and latterly now in Canada. He currently works as Program Coordinator for the Long Point Bird Observatory in Ontario, a program of Birds Canada, the longest running bird observatory in the Western Hemisphere. Being able to educate, guide, and nurture enthusiasm for the natural world among the volunteers and the public has been a rewarding journey. It’s always a joy to watch a face light up with happiness at the sight of a new wildlife experience and being able to foster that is a true privilege.

Samuel has also dedicated over a decade of his life to learning the art of bird banding and as a certified bird bander he is eager to share this unique opportunity to study and gather data on birds for the purposes of conservation. He enjoys this hands-on approach which combines an appreciation of the intricacies which make up a bird, how to master the skill of bird identification, and how it tells the story of migration. Working with birds has proved to be diverse and rewarding career spanning from songbirds to seabirds to shorebirds, most memorably the raucous sounds, stunning sight, and suffocating smells of a thriving seabird colony.

Now based in New Brunswick, Samuel enjoys pursuing a variety of natural history avenues not least the fascinating variety of moths which flutter about pollinating plants whilst we sleep. Other hobbies include cycling, photography, and climbing, all of which allow him to engage with the natural world and people alike.
