Anna discovered her passion for birds after moving to Aotearoa New Zealand from Germany in 2014. What began as fascination with the country's unique endemic species soon developed into a career in conservation with particular focus on threatened species and habitat protection. Based in the Bay of Plenty region, Anna is heavily involved in community conservation efforts. She works with Kororā (Little Penguin) and Tūturiwhatu (Northern New Zealand Dotterel) at Western Bay Wildlife Trust. Her work includes scientific monitoring, habitat restoration, and engaging local communities in shorebird protection. During her time as a Senior Kiwi Keeper at a leading hatchery, Anna cared for Kiwi-nui (North Island Brown Kiwi) while guiding educational tours and exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences for visitors from around the world.
Anna's hands-on conservation journey has taken her throughout New Zealand over the years, where she has volunteered with some of the country's most iconic birds including Kākāpō, Takahē, Whio (Blue Duck), and Hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin). In 2023, Anna received a "True Young Explorer" scholarship, joining an expedition to New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands, which inspired her to focus more on conservation communications and awareness alongside her existing involvement.
When not in the field, Anna co-hosts the "People Helping Nature Podcast," which amplifies conservation stories throughout New Zealand with a focus on community-led initiatives. An avid hiker and hobby-photographer, she also enjoys exploring New Zealand's diverse landscapes while documenting its unique plant and birdlife along the way.
