Alvin’s interest in birding started in earnest in the mid-80’s when he took an Ornithology course at the University of Manitoba. He went on to complete his MSc. in Zoology and after a few stints as a research assistant, he worked for Ducks Unlimited Canada at the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre developing and delivering educational programs about wetland ecology for students and the public. He went on to lead their national youth education program called Greenwing. From there he became a teacher where he continued to share his love for the outdoors, birds, and ecology by involving his students in programs like; “The Schoolyard Bird Blitz”, “Monarch Teacher’s Network”, “Ag in the Classroom”, and annual nest box maintenance events.
Alvin continues to contribute to a variety of volunteer citizen science initiatives. He has run survey routes for the MB Nocturnal Owl Survey for over 20 years, done Woodcock surveys for the Canadian Wildlife Service, was involved in Manitoba’s recent Breeding Bird Atlas, and he conducts annual Breeding Bird Surveys and Christmas Bird Counts. Alvin looks forward to sharing his love for the natural world with guests on upcoming tours!
