On our Patagonia Wildlife Safari we visited the Valdez Peninsula and traversed Patagonia from Ushuaia to Torres del Paine. Along the way we encountered spectacular scenery, abundant birdlife and many of the most iconic birds of the southern tip of South America including Lesser Rhea, 3 species of steamer-duck, Magellanic Plover, King Penguin, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Magellanic Woodpecker, and many more. We also had fabulous wildlife sightings including Puma, Guanaco, Southern Right Whales, Southern Elephant Seals, Patagonia Mara and many more.Any time spent in this raw, rugged and awe-inspiring landscape is indelibly imprinted on your memory, and this year was no different.

Our Eastern Australia birding tour includes birdin

Our Eastern Australia birding tour includes birding around Cairns, the Daintree, Mount Carbine and the Atherton Tablelands; Brisbane and Lamington National Park; Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Capertee Valley and Barren Grounds. We had many highlights on the tour, including great sightings of both species of Lyrebird; Cassowaries; all three species of Frogmouth; Rufous and both Sooty Owls; Spotted Whistling Duck; three species of Albatross; three species of Booby among thousands of Common Noddies and Sooty Terns; Australian Bustards; Sarus Cranes; Squatter Pigeons; Apostlebirds; Beach Stone Curlew; Little Curlew; Southern Emuwren; Eastern Bristlebird; Golden, Regent, Satin, Great and Tooth-billed Bowerbirds; 11 species of Robin and much more. In total we saw 322 species and 5 heard-only.

Southeast Brazil holds a large diversity of flora

Southeast Brazil holds a large diversity of flora and fauna, tucked into mountainous parks and reserves in the once-vast Atlantic forest. Endemism is high, with around 40% of plants and 200 species of birds being found only here.

Our Brazil Atlantic Forest birding tour visited several key locations, including Itataia National Park, Ubatuba, and Intervales State Park. When inside these forest reserves, our group of eight (six guests plus two leaders, Steve Ogle and Filipe Arantes) experienced a seemingly unending stream of exotic species. We saw a total of 349 species and visited at least four feeder set-ups, which helped with photography and closer looks at dazzling bird species.

Our Costa Rica Caribbean tour is almost completely

Our Costa Rica Caribbean tour is almost completely spent on the Caribbean slope, but covers a great elevational gradient from the páramo on the high mountaintops of Irazú Volcano where many endemic species live among the giant Costa Rican Red Oaks and the breathtaking Resplendent Quetzal feeds on wild avocados. One of the highlights of this tour is by far the raptor migration as we visit the funnel point in the south east of the country where the mountains come down to the coast and concentrate the migrants through a very narrow passage-way and giving us the opportunity to see kettles of thousands of hawks spanning the sky. The variety of habitats and elevations make this a greatly diverse trip. This tour also has a strong educational and conservation component as we visit several of the projects led by the Cerúlea Environmental Association and learn about their efforts on the ground to create and protect habitat, as well as a visit to an organic shade-grown coffee farm at Café Cristina. We also had the opportunity to see three species of monkeys and a variety of other wildlife.

Borneo is surely one of the top birding and nature

Borneo is surely one of the top birding and nature destinations in the world! On our Borneo: Bristleheads & Orangutans tour we had many birding highlights including the fabulous Bristleheads at Sepilok, some great looks at Black-crowned and Blue-headed Pittas, various secretive babblers and assorted Broadbills, and the Great Argus! And then of course there was the rather mind-blowing afternoon on the Kenabatangan River when a parade of 6 of the 8 Hornbill species showed.

We also did extremely well for mammals (the Bornean Pygmy Elephant encounter at Kenabatangan was wonderful, and the night hike at Sepilok - Colugos, Tarsier, Slow Loris, Giant Red Flying Squirrels - was very successful), with mother and child Orangutan right next to our hotel at Sepilok!
