Ismael is a wildlife conservationist passionate about the planet’s biodiversity. He grew up climbing hills and Nothofagus trees in the woodlands of southernmost Magallanes from as early as he can remember.
As a professional, he has monitored birds, amphibians, mammals, cetaceans, and aquatic invertebrates throughout Chile, the Peruvian highlands, and the Ecuadorian Amazon. He has also enjoyed birding and discovering new species in Brazil and Costa Rica.
For more than 14 years, he has dedicated his life to promoting conservation biology in different areas of his work. As an environmental conservationist, he has taught high school students and park rangers about wildlife and conservation.
He has also supported the fieldwork of international volunteers and university students in Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most important protected areas in Patagonia. Whenever the opportunity arises, he enjoys talking about his passion: the Animal Kingdom.
During the last four years, he has guided tours throughout Patagonia for more than ten companies, leading Magellanic Penguin tours, King Penguin excursions in Tierra del Fuego, hikes through Magellanic Woodpecker forests, Birds of South America and Tierra del Fuego programs, birding tours along the Strait of Magellan and the Magellanic Steppe, as well as photography and puma scouting trips.
Bird surveys have been a major part of his professional career, and he has been a birdwatcher since university. Ismael is always happy to share his knowledge with his guests and looks forward to seeing the reaction of birders when they spot a lifer in Patagonia or elsewhere in Latin America.
