April is a superb time to be in Algonquin Provincial Park, in south-centr al Ontario. Winter has
released its grip, spring has started,
and resident birds are becoming very active in courtship and territorial
behaviour. It is at this time that it is most easy to find boreal forest
specialties: Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Spruce
Grouse, White-winged and Red Crossbills, and maybe a northern owl.
Ice has mostly left the lakes, and Common Loons and waterfowl are arriving.
Mammals can be quite obvious – moose, otter, red fox, perhaps
black bear and timber wolf, and even pine marten. There are no insects
to contend with, and there will be very few other humans in the park.
The weather can be quite pleasant, but it may be a little chilly in
the morning and evening, so dress warmly. We stay in a fine hotel in
Huntsville, a charming town to the west of the park.
