It was about ten years ago that Peter Sherrington discovered a truly remarkable wildlife event – the migration of Golden Eagles through the valleys of the Rockies in Kananaskis country, south of Banff National Park. Each spring and fall, hundreds of this marvelous raptor migrate along the face of Mount Lorette, visible from clearings along the Kananaskis River. Most are high, but usually some are low enough for excellent views. Other raptors may be migrating as well, including Bald Eagles and Rough-legged Hawks, and possibly Northern Goshawk. When the migration is slow, we look for resident birds such as Clark’s Nutcracker, Mountain Chickadee, Gray-crowned Rosy Finch and others, and there should be some large mammals present – elk, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, and much more. And the scenery is spectacular. We stay in the charming town of Canmore, nestled in the mountain valley. Winter is slowly losing its grip at this time, but it will be cold, so prepare for chilly weather.
