We start our quest for our special target species in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia. Cape Breton is a rugged land of picturesque seascapes, extensive forests and high plateaus, and includes the internationally renowned Cabot Trail, one of the mostBlack-legged Kittiwake scenic drives anywhere. In January, the landscape is starkly beautiful, often snow covered, with plenty of sea ice close inshore. It is a place to dress warmly. Dovekies winter around Cape Breton, mostly far offshore but there are always some along the coastline, often right along the shore in sheltered rocky coves. Iceland Gulls are common, especially in Sydney, and they afford an excellent opportunity for studying closely this variable species. With them will be Great Black-backed and Glaucous Gulls. In forests along the coast are Boreal Chickadees, Gray Jays, Bohemian Waxwings, Spruce Grouse and probably White-winged Crossbills. Off shore are Long-tailed Ducks, Black Guillemots and maybe a scarcer species such as Harlequin Duck. Our tour is guided by local naturalists who will have a very good idea where our target species can be found.
