Martin Parker

Martin Parker is a birder and naturalist who started birding in the early 1960s. For the next 20 years, he worked in several Provincial Parks through Ontario, introducing visitors to special features of each park. Martin in partnership with his wife, Kathy, operated the Federation of Ontario Naturalists Membership Trips Programme from 1984 – 1995, a programme of 150 trips annually throughout the province. In a survey of participants of the FON Membership Trips Programme, Martin was identified as the most popular leader. His leadership style involved group participation in a learning environment, yet with time to enjoy the other attributes of the region being visited. Martin has encouraged others to expand their skills in birding and natural history in order to become competent field naturalists.

Martin was a regional coordinator for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas, Bruce County for the first Atlas and the District of Parry Sound for the 2nd Atlas. He has participated in Christmas Bird Counts annually since 1962 and has been the founder of many different counts in the province. He writes a weekly bird watching column for the North Bay Nugget. Over the years he has conducted natural history inventories and projects. He has been an active member of many local natural history clubs and is currently a Director and Newsletter Editor for the Nipissing Naturalists Club in North Bay.

Martin has been leading trips since 1971, has lead tours to the Mid-Atlantic States, Florida, Texas, Arizona and all regions of Ontario. Since his visit to The Gambia in western Africa in 2005, he is looking forward to introducing this special birding destination to others.
